Business Breakdown Cover
Business breakdown cover gets a working vehicle going again, or gets it and its driver where they need to be, when it breaks down. We arrange it with RAC as one package: roadside assistance, recovery, help at home and onward travel, from £80 a vehicle.
What Business Breakdown Cover Does
It is a different thing from your motor insurance. The motor policy pays for accident damage, theft and your liability to others. Breakdown cover deals with the van that will not start at seven in the morning, the flat battery on site, and the clutch that goes on the motorway.
For a business the cost of a breakdown is mostly the lost day: the job that does not get done and the crew stood waiting. Having all four parts in the package means the day is covered wherever the vehicle stops, including outside the driver's house.
What Business Breakdown Cover Covers
Roadside assistance
A patrol comes out to the vehicle and tries to fix it there and then, so the driver can carry on with the day.
Recovery
If it cannot be fixed at the roadside, the vehicle and driver are recovered rather than left waiting.
At home
Help when the vehicle will not start at the driver's home, which is where many breakdowns actually happen and the part the cheapest breakdown products leave out.
Onward travel
Getting the driver to where they were going when the van is off the road for longer, so the job still gets done.
Where The Cover Stops
Wordings differ between insurers, so treat these as the usual position rather than as universal fact. Where one of them matters to you, it is worth checking on your own schedule before you need to.
The cost of repairs
Breakdown cover pays for the call out, roadside help and recovery. Parts and garage repairs are paid for separately.
Vehicle weight and size
Cover is set for vehicles up to stated weights and sizes. If you run heavier vans or trucks, tell us so we can check they qualify.
Accidents and theft
Recovery after an accident is normally handled through your motor insurance rather than your breakdown cover.
Vehicles not on the cover
Each vehicle needs to be on the cover. A van added to the fleet mid year needs adding here too.
Breakdown Cover Alongside Your Fleet Insurance
We arrange breakdown cover alongside motor fleet, mini fleet and van insurance, so a business has one place to go for both. Some motor policies include a basic recovery service; it is worth checking what yours actually does before relying on it.
When vehicles change during the year, tell us at the same time for both. A van added to the fleet policy but not to the breakdown cover is the gap that shows up on a cold morning.
Why All Four Parts Matter For A Working Van
Plenty of breakdown products sold on price cover breakdowns away from home only. For a van that starts its day outside the driver's house, that leaves out exactly the breakdown most likely to happen. The package we arrange includes help at home.
Recovery matters most for vans that travel. A breakdown two hundred miles from base with a van full of tools is where being recovered, rather than towed to the nearest garage and left, earns its keep.
For a crew, onward travel is worth more than it looks. Getting the driver on to the job saves the day's work, which is the real cost of a breakdown.
How To Choose Business Breakdown Cover
Breakdown cover is easy to buy and easy to buy short. These are the questions worth asking of any policy before you choose.
Does it cover the vehicle at home?
Many breakdowns happen before the day starts. Cheaper products often leave this out.
Does it include recovery and onward travel?
Roadside help alone does not get the driver to the job when the van cannot be fixed there.
Does it cover your heavier vans?
Check the weight and size limits against every vehicle you run.
Is it priced per vehicle?
Per vehicle pricing makes it simple to add and remove vans as the fleet changes.
We arrange business breakdown cover with RAC that includes roadside, recovery, at home and onward travel as standard, from £80 a vehicle, alongside van, mini fleet and motor fleet insurance.
How Much Does Business Breakdown Cover Cost?
