    Heating and Gas Engineers Insurance

Gas is the one trade on this site where the worst outcome is not a bill. Get a flue wrong and a family does not wake up. That is why registration is the law here rather than a badge, and why we will not write this trade without seeing yours.

It also changes what the limit is for. On most trades the limit is sized against buildings. On gas it is sized against people, and a single carbon monoxide claim involving a household will go through £2m without much difficulty. We do not recommend writing gas engineers at that level.

The other half of the risk is paperwork. Signing a landlord gas safety record is a professional statement that somebody else relies on to meet their legal duty, and it takes twenty minutes. For engineers doing volume certification, that twenty minutes carries more exposure than the installation work does.

How Much Is Heating & Gas Engineers Insurance?

Across the 45 plumbing and heating policies on our book, most fall between £395 and £1,448 a year, with the middle sitting around £778. We quote the range rather than the cheapest policy we have ever placed, because the very lowest is always an outlier and tells you nothing about your own business. These are premiums arranged for other firms, not a quote for yours.

What moves the price is the same in every trade: turnover, how many people work under your direction, the work you take on, and your claims record. We are a broker, so we take it to several insurers rather than quoting one. Call 02382 000820 for a realistic figure.

What Heating & Gas Engineers Insurance Covers

    Public Liability Insurance

Answers claims for injury and for damage to other people's property. On this trade that means carbon monoxide exposure, fire, gas escape, and the water damage that comes with any heating system running through a whole building.

    Employers' Liability Insurance

A legal requirement as soon as anybody works to your instructions, and included in every package we arrange. Registered engineers, apprentices and anyone self-employed working under your direction all count towards it.

    Professional Indemnity

The cover for what you certify rather than what you install. If a landlord relies on a record you signed and it turns out the check missed something, that is a claim about your judgement, and public liability has nothing to say about it.

    Tools & Equipment Cover

Analysers, manometers, power tools and hand tools. An analyser needs calibrating and cannot be replaced the same afternoon, so it is worth insuring at what it costs to buy now rather than what you paid.

    Contract Works Cover

The installation before it is signed off, plus boilers and cylinders sat on site. Unfitted boilers are stolen often enough that insurers ask where they are kept overnight.

Why Your Paperwork Is Your Defence

Carbon monoxide claims are not decided on whether you are a good engineer. They are decided on what you can produce from the visit two years ago. Analyser readings, the commissioning record, what you noted about ventilation and the flue route.

Engineers who keep that properly are in a completely different position from engineers who remember doing the job. It costs nothing at the time and it is the only thing standing between you and a claim that is argued entirely on the other side's evidence. If you do nothing else after reading this page, sort out where those records go.

Landlord Certificates Are A Different Kind Of Risk

A landlord safety record is relied on by the landlord for compliance, filed by the agent, and given to the tenant. If something happens afterwards and the inspection is found wanting, all three look at the signature.

Because that is reliance on a document rather than damage caused by your hands, public liability does not reach it. Professional indemnity does. Any engineer doing rounds of certification for letting agents should be carrying it, and most are not.

    Working Inside Your Categories

Cover assumes you are working within what you are registered for. Commercial catering, industrial plant and certain appliance types sit outside a standard domestic registration, and stepping over that line is a regulatory problem and a coverage problem in the same moment.

If the business is moving into commercial kitchens or heat pumps, tell us before the first job rather than at renewal. Heat pumps in particular bring refrigerant, outdoor units at height and design decisions that a policy written for domestic boilers never had in mind.

Gas Engineers With Claims Or Enforcement Behind Them

This is a trade where one incident can make renewal genuinely difficult, and where the standard market response is to stop returning calls. That is not the same as being uninsurable.

What we need is the full story rather than the summary: what happened, what the investigation concluded, and what changed in how you work afterwards. Underwriters who write gas are used to reading that, and a documented change of procedure carries real weight with them. A gap in cover does not, so do not let one open while you shop around.

If you are mid-renewal and the numbers have moved sharply, ring 02382 000820 and talk it through before you sign anything.

    What We Need To Quote

    • Last year's turnover, and the domestic against commercial split
    • Your registration and which appliance categories it covers
    • Roughly how much of the work is landlord certification
    • Whether you install and commission or service only
    • Any commercial catering, industrial plant or heat pump work
    • Claims and any enforcement contact in the last five years

    Common questions

How much is gas engineer insurance?+

Most plumbing and heating policies on our book fall between £395 and £1,448 a year, with the middle around £778. Gas work tends to sit in the upper half of that, because the consequence of getting it wrong is injury rather than inconvenience. Those are premiums we arranged for other firms rather than a quote for yours. Call 02382 000820 and we will price your own.

Am I liable for a landlord gas safety record I signed?+

Yes, and it is the exposure most engineers overlook. The record is relied on by the landlord to meet a legal duty, filed by the agent and handed to the tenant. If an incident follows and the inspection is found inadequate, all three look at who signed it. Because that is reliance on a document rather than damage from your physical work, public liability does not respond and professional indemnity does.

What limit should a gas engineer carry?+

£5m as a floor, and £10m on commercial work. The reasoning is different from other trades: you are not sizing the limit against a building, you are sizing it against a household. A carbon monoxide claim involving a family will move through £2m without much trouble, which is why we do not recommend writing this trade at that level even where a client has only asked for it.

Can I get cover after a gas incident or enforcement action?+

Usually, but it needs handling rather than submitting. Underwriters who write gas will read the detail: what happened, what the investigation found, and what you changed afterwards. A documented change in procedure counts for a great deal. What hurts far more than the incident is a gap in cover while you shop around, so keep something in force and ring us on 02382 000820 before you let anything lapse.

Do I need different cover for heat pumps?+

It needs adding rather than assuming. Heat pump work brings refrigerant circuits, outdoor units often installed at height, electrical connection and system sizing decisions, and some of it needs separate certification. None of that is in the mind of a policy written for domestic boiler servicing. If you are taking on renewable heating, tell us before the first installation rather than at renewal.
