    Employer's Liability Insurance

Fulfill legal obligations and safeguard your employees against work-related injuries or illnesses with this essential coverage.

Stock Deterioration and Frozen Food Cover

Fish, chips and other frozen stock spoil quickly when a freezer or chiller fails, or when the power goes off. Stock deterioration cover pays for the ruined stock rather than leaving you to absorb it. For most chippies this is the claim that actually happens, so we make sure it is on the policy rather than assumed.

Your Frying Range and Kitchen Equipment

The range, extraction, fridges and freezers are the business, and they are normally insured as part of your contents, against the perils the policy names, which commonly include fire, flood, theft and accidental damage. Fire is the risk that matters most in a chippy, which is why we place this cover with insurers who understand hot oil rather than treating a fryer like any other appliance.

Products Liability and Food Poisoning Claims

Products liability responds when food you have sold is alleged to have made someone ill, covering defence costs as well as any damages. It applies to food eaten in, taken away or delivered, and it is essential protection for any business serving the public.

    Glass and Shop Front Cover

Shop front glass, display counters and illuminated signs are expensive to replace and vulnerable on a high street. Glass cover deals with accidental and malicious breakage, usually including boarding up and making the premises secure while replacement is arranged.

    Money and Goods in Transit

Takeaways handle cash daily. Money cover protects takings on the premises, in transit to the bank and at your home overnight, and can extend to assault of you or your staff during a theft. Goods in transit covers stock while it is being moved.

    Delivery and Third Party Platforms

If you deliver yourself, your drivers need motor cover on a hire and reward basis, as an ordinary policy generally will not extend to carrying food for payment. If you take orders through third party platforms, we make sure liability cover follows the food off the premises rather than stopping at the door.

    Legal Expenses Cover

An employment dispute, a tax enquiry or an environmental health issue can be expensive long before anyone reaches a courtroom. Legal expenses cover funds defence costs and usually comes with a legal advice helpline you can call before a problem escalates.

The Range Is Why This Trade Is Rated Apart

A frying range holds a large volume of oil at high temperature for hours at a time, which makes a chip shop one of the more closely underwritten food businesses there is.

Insurers will ask about the range itself. Age, make, whether it is serviced and certificated, and whether there is fixed fire suppression over it. They will ask about the extraction system and when it was last professionally deep cleaned. And they will ask about the oil: how it is filtered, stored and disposed of, and whether it is ever moved while hot.

Good answers genuinely change the price. A serviced modern range with suppression and current cleaning certificates is a different proposition from an old one with neither, and the difference shows in what the market will offer.

If There Is A Flat Above The Shop

A great many chip shops have accommodation above them, and it changes the insurance in ways owners often do not think to mention.

If you own the building, the flat is part of what you are insuring and its use matters. Whether it is let, occupied by you, or empty. If it is let, that is a residential letting sitting above a high fire-risk premises, and both halves need declaring.

Fire separation between the shop and the accommodation is what insurers focus on, and older properties are frequently weakest here. If a fire risk assessment has identified works, having them done and documented is worth real money at renewal, and rather more than that if there is ever a fire.

    What Underwriters Ask

Good answers here genuinely move the price.

    • Range age, make and service record
    • Fixed fire suppression over the range
    • Extraction cleaning certificates
    • How oil is filtered, stored and disposed of
    • Accommodation above the shop
    • Frozen stock value
    • Flexible payment options
    • Dedicated account managers
    • Out-of-hours contact should you need to make a claim or just have a question
    • A quick and easy, pain-free service
    • An excellent customer experience

Extraction Cleaning Is A Policy Condition

This is the condition that decides more chip shop fire claims than anything else, and it is written into most policies rather than offered as advice. Insurers typically require the full extraction system (canopy, filters, ductwork and fan) professionally deep cleaned at set intervals with a certificate, commonly every six months for frying.

Wiping the canopy does not satisfy it, and the clean has to cover the whole duct run rather than the visible parts. Keep the certificates and diarise the next one: a fire claim where the last certificate has expired is the hardest kind to argue, because the wording is unambiguous and the paperwork is the evidence.

Shops With A Fire Behind Them

A previous fire narrows this market considerably. Some insurers will not write a chip shop with a fire in the last five years at all, so it removes options rather than simply loading the premium.

What reopens it is evidence of change: a new range, fixed suppression fitted, a shorter extraction cleaning interval with certificates to prove it, revised closing-down procedures. Underwriters who write this trade will read that. Bring the detail rather than the claim count and the conversation is a different one.

    Business Interruption After A Fire

A serious fire does not close a chip shop for a fortnight. Making the building safe, agreeing the claim, obtaining consents, refitting a kitchen and installing a new range and extraction takes months, and then the customers who went elsewhere have to come back.

Set the indemnity period against that whole recovery rather than the building work alone; twenty-four months is more realistic than twelve for most shops. And get the gross profit figure right, since it is an insurance definition rather than the number in your accounts, and understating it reduces the payout proportionally. Premiums can be paid monthly or annually.

    What We Need To Quote

Annual turnover and the split between counter and delivery, whether you own or lease the building and its rebuild cost, the age and make of your range and whether it has fixed fire suppression, your extraction cleaning interval and certificates, the value of contents, equipment and stock, whether there is accommodation above, how many staff you employ, and your claims record for the last five years.

Fish and Chip Shop Insurance FAQs

What does fish and chip shop insurance cover?

A tailored policy usually combines buildings and contents cover, stock, public and products liability, employers' liability, business interruption, and cover for kitchen equipment such as your fryers and range. We build it around how your shop actually operates.

How much does fish and chip shop insurance cost?

Most single site fish and chip shops we place pay from around £700 a year for a combined policy, including insurance premium tax, so that is the figure you would actually pay rather than one with tax still to add. Size is what splits it. A small family run shop starts at around £600 a year, because the sums insured on stock and equipment are lower and the turnover is smaller. A larger shop with staff, higher turnover and more equipment sits above that, and a multi site operation goes further again. What moves you within that range is predictable: your annual turnover, the rebuild value of the building if you own it, the sums insured on stock and equipment, how many staff you employ, and your claims history over the last five years. Expect to sit at the higher end, or above it, where there is accommodation above the shop, late night opening, a previous fire or escape of water claim, or no fixed fire suppression over the range. A clean claims record, a monitored alarm, a modern range that is serviced and certificated, and sums insured that reflect real values rather than round numbers all pull it down. Tell us those details and we will give you a real figure rather than a guess.

Do I need public liability insurance for a fish and chip shop?

It isn't a legal requirement, but in practice it's essential. It protects you if a customer is injured or their property is damaged in connection with your business. If you employ anyone, employers' liability insurance is a legal requirement.

Does the policy cover deep fat fryers and cooking equipment?

Yes. Cover for your fryers, range and other commercial kitchen equipment can be included against fire, flood and accidental damage. The fire risk from fryers is exactly why specialist cover matters for a chippy.

Can you insure a fish and chip takeaway with a poor claims history?

Often, yes. We have solutions for distressed and difficult claims histories, and will work with you to find the best available cover for your circumstances rather than turning you away.

Do you cover fish and chip shops that offer deliveries?

Yes. If you deliver, we make sure the right cover is in place for that side of the business, so you're protected both on and off the premises.

Does fish and chip shop insurance cover frozen stock if a freezer breaks down?

It can. Stock deterioration cover, sometimes called frozen food or refrigerated stock cover, pays for fish and other frozen stock that spoils when a freezer or chiller fails or the power goes off. It is a claim chippies make regularly, so it is worth asking for it specifically rather than assuming contents cover alone will respond.

Am I covered if a customer gets food poisoning?

Products liability is the part of the policy that responds to illness or injury caused by food you have sold, including food poisoning allegations. It normally sits alongside public liability and covers defence costs as well as damages. It is essential for any food business and is included as standard on the policies we arrange.

    Is my frying range covered?

Yes, against fire, flood, theft and accidental damage, as part of your contents cover. Fire is the risk that matters most in a fish and chip shop, so we place this with insurers who understand hot oil rather than rating a fryer like an ordinary appliance. Mechanical or electrical breakdown of the machine itself is not covered, so a range that simply stops working is a maintenance matter rather than a claim.

What insurance do you need for a food business?

Employers' liability is a legal requirement as soon as you employ anyone, with very limited exemptions. In practice you also want public and products liability, buildings and contents, stock including frozen stock, and business interruption. If you deliver, you need motor cover on a hire and reward basis. Glass, money and legal expenses are common additions for a takeaway.

Is it illegal to run a business without public liability insurance?

No. Public liability insurance is not a legal requirement in the UK. Employers' liability insurance is, once you employ staff. That said, most landlords, franchisors and commercial contracts will insist on public liability before they will deal with you, and without it you are personally exposed to a customer injury claim.

Is it illegal to deliver food without business insurance?

Delivering food is not itself illegal without a business policy, but the motor side is. If you or your staff deliver by car, van or moped, the vehicle needs motor insurance that covers hire and reward use. A standard social, domestic and pleasure or commuting policy will not cover food delivery, and driving without valid cover is a motoring offence. Your products liability should also extend to food once it has left the shop.
