Wine Bar Insurance
Specialist insurance for wine bars, built around your stock, your cellar and how late you trade rather than a generic licensed template.
Insurance for wine bars
A wine bar carries a risk most licensed policies are not written for: the stock is the asset. A cellar can be worth more than the fit out, it is concentrated in one room, and it is vulnerable to something as mundane as a cooling unit failing over a bank holiday weekend. Wine bar business insurance has to reflect that, which means stock insured at peak value, deterioration cover that matches what the cellar is really worth, and inner limits that do not quietly exclude your best bottles.
We are an independent broker, so we place insurance for wine bars across the specialist licensed trade markets rather than being tied to one insurer. Whether you are a small neighbourhood bar, a wine bar with a serious kitchen, or somewhere that trades late with music at weekends, the cover is built around how you actually operate.
The three things wine bars most often get wrong
Stock insured at average rather than peak. A claim in the run up to Christmas is settled against the figure you declared, not the value on the shelves. Declare the peak.
No deterioration cover on the cellar. Temperature control failing is one of the more likely losses in this trade and one of the most expensive, because it can affect everything at once rather than one fridge.
Licensed hours declared inaccurately. If the schedule says you close at eleven and an incident happens at two, that is a dispute you do not want to be having.

Common questions
What does wine bar insurance cover?+
Wine bar insurance is normally a package: buildings if you own the premises, contents and trade fixtures, wet stock, money, glass, public and products liability, employers' liability for your staff, and business interruption for lost income if you cannot trade. Two covers matter more in a wine bar than in most licensed premises: stock, because a serious wine list is worth far more than a standard bar inventory, and deterioration of stock, because temperature controlled storage failing can spoil the most valuable part of it.
How much does wine bar insurance cost?+
Wine bar insurance starts at around £500 to £600 a year including insurance premium tax for a smaller venue, and rises from there with the size of the operation. A bar with a significant food offering, a late licence or a high value cellar will sit well above that. What moves it is the value of your stock, your turnover and wages, whether you own or lease the building, your licensed hours, and your claims history over the last five years. A high value cellar, late night trading, or a previous escape of water or theft claim will push it up. These are ball park figures rather than a quote, so tell us your stock value and turnover and we will give you a real one.
Is my wine stock covered, and for how much?+
Yes, as stock, and this is the figure most wine bars get wrong. Stock should be insured at cost price rather than retail, but it must reflect peak levels rather than an average, because a claim in December when the cellar is full is settled against the sum insured you declared. If you hold rare or high value bottles, tell us: many policies carry an inner limit per single item that would not cover a fine wine, and it needs to be declared separately rather than assumed.
Does it cover wine spoiling if the cellar cooling fails?+
Deterioration of stock cover responds where refrigeration or temperature control fails and stock is spoiled, including a power failure at the supply. For a wine bar this is one of the more likely claims and one of the more expensive, because heat damage can affect an entire cellar rather than a single fridge. It is not always included as standard, so ask for it specifically and check whether the limit reflects what your cellar is actually worth.
Do I need public liability insurance for a wine bar?+
It is not a legal requirement but it is essential in practice, and most landlords and premises licences require it. Public liability covers injury to customers and damage to their property, which in a licensed venue most often means slips on spilled drink and glass injuries. Products liability sits alongside it and responds to the drink and food you serve. Employers' liability is a legal requirement as soon as you employ anyone, including part time and casual bar staff.
What insurance do I need for a wine bar that serves food?+
Once you serve food the risk changes and the policy has to follow. Products liability needs to cover food as well as drink, so it responds to food poisoning allegations. If there is a commercial kitchen you need cover for the equipment and, importantly, the extraction system, which insurers will expect to be professionally cleaned and certificated at least annually. Stock cover should include food as well as wine, and deterioration cover should extend to chilled and frozen food, not just the cellar.
Is glass covered?+
Glass cover is worth having and is inexpensive. It covers the shopfront, windows, mirrors and glazed fittings, which in a bar get broken more often than owners expect, and replacement of a large shopfront pane is a several thousand pound job. It usually sits as a separate section with its own limit rather than falling under contents.
Do you cover wine bars with late licences or live music?+
Yes. A late licence changes the risk rather than making it uninsurable, and it needs to be declared accurately: an insurer rating a venue as closing at eleven will have grounds to dispute a claim arising at two in the morning. Live music, DJs and any dancing should also be declared, because at some point the venue is being rated as a bar and at some point as a late night venue, and the difference matters at claim stage.
Can you insure a new wine bar with no trading history?+
Yes. New ventures are placed regularly and the absence of a claims history is not a barrier, though insurers will want to see relevant experience, your projected turnover, and the security and fire protection at the premises. If you have run licensed premises before, say so, because it materially improves the terms available.
Do you provide insurance for wine bars across the UK?+
Yes. We are an independent broker arranging wine bar business insurance nationally, placing it across the specialist licensed trade markets rather than through a single insurer. That matters in this trade because the difference between a generic bar policy and proper insurance for wine bars shows up in the detail: stock at peak value, deterioration cover on the cellar, and inner limits that do not quietly exclude your best bottles.
